just in case the link goes bad

It’s summer in the southern hemisphere, and that means RV season for Aussies and Kiwis. But the camper hasn’t been cool for years, save the iconic Airstream trailer. To combat the boring designs littering roads Down Under, Christchurch, New Zealand, design firm W2 has created the Romotow, a convertible trailer that pops out – flash-drive style – into a fully functional and downright attractive living space with enough extra square footage to lounge. That might not mean much for us in North America, but the caravan motorhome and camping industry is the fastest-growing tourism sector in Australia and New Zealand.

Besides calculated aerodynamics and lightweight construction materials, the caravan comes with power-assisted braking, pneumatic shocks, gyroscope-assisted self-leveling pads and struts, and a rear-mounted camera for tricky back-ups. Inside, there’s a kitchenette, bathroom, louvered windows for air flow and built-in shades. Buyers can add on a sheltered BBQ deck area, sliding doors, and furniture.

“The Romotow can provide this flexibility,” co-designer Stuart Winterbourn said. “You can even use it as a home and horse float and travel with your horse to an overnight equestrian event.” Is it too late to make a Mitt Romney joke?

Right now, W2 is talking with caravan manufacturers to build a prototype for testing, fitting and eventual production, aiming to have the Romotow on the market by 2015.
